And it means treating expiration not as a penalty but as a feature—evidence that the council takes the integrity of its designation seriously enough to maintain it actively.
Several professional sectors in the US have implemented this approach with measurable success. The logic holds when examined closely. Planned credential lifecycles are one of the clearest expressions of that commitment. They require more administrative investment than indefinite credentials. They require more difficult conversations with holders who would prefer their designation to require nothing further of them. And they require a willingness to acknowledge, publicly and on a schedule, that today's standard will eventually need to become tomorrow's baseline.
