Richard "Doc" Heins, the retired President/CEO of CUNA Mutual Group, died recently. Doc was one of the most fascinating and interesting people found in the credit union movement. Doc was a brilliant gentleman, but never wore it on his sleeve. As you know, the hallmark of a brilliant person is their ability to translate complicated facts into simple and easy understandable thoughts.

Depending on your credit union’s size and location, the recent Bluebird (the joint program from American Express and Walmart) announcement that it has obtained FDIC insurance coverage, should be an eye opener. The following two paragraphs are excerpted from the American Express news release:

Bluebird Accounts will now be eligible for FDIC insurance, providing an extra layer of security. As a result, permanent Bluebird Accounts will now have the ability to receive direct deposit of government payments, such as social security payments, military pay, and tax refunds. In my last blog I wrote about gearing up for the 2013 CEO Summit. The event took place a few weeks ago and I’m really missing the Florida weather. I hope to spend more time on the west coast of Florida in my retirement. Last time I spoke about driving down, but due to last minute cancellations, I was able to hop the Autotrain to get back and forth.

To get to the 13th Annual CEO Summit, I plan on driving the 1,200+ miles to Naples since the Autotrain was sold out. That’s a far better way to go if not flying. As the immortal Jackie Gleason used to say, “And away we go!”

I’m looking forward to this week for good networking and to find out what’s on the minds of credit union leaders from the Mid-Atlantic States. Pennsylvania has the most attendees, supplemented by great leaders from West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey.
